The Shared Stewardship Collective is a new network for young people (aged 18–35) who want to explore how faith, communities, and environmental action can work together to create a more sustainable future.
Birmingham is recognised as one of the UK’s leading cities for interfaith collaboration, with faith communities playing a vital role in environmental action—from community gardens and biodiversity projects to climate action, sustainable living, and neighbourhood regeneration.
As Birmingham’s dedicated interfaith environmental charity, Footsteps is bringing together young people through the Shared Stewardship Collective to create a space where people at different stages of their journey can connect, learn from one another, and explore how they can contribute to environmental action—whether by strengthening existing projects or developing new ideas of their own.
The Shared Stewardship Collective has been shaped by young people, informed by research into what young people want from environmental and community initiatives. We want this to be a space that responds to the interests, ideas, and needs of those involved, which is why we will continue listening, learning, and co-creating opportunities with young people at every stage.
Upcoming opportunities will include practical, hands-on projects such as creating a small urban intervention in Birmingham, as well as engaging community events featuring activities like clothing swaps, plant swaps, and opportunities to connect with others passionate about sustainability and community action.
The Collective aims to support young people to:
- Connect with others interested in faith and environmental action.
- Learn how different faith traditions inspire environmental stewardship.
- Share ideas, experiences, and practical solutions.
- Build relationships across communities and organisations.
- Gain skills, confidence, and support to develop or strengthen environmental projects.
- Showcase and amplify inspiring projects and initiatives, helping to make young people’s environmental work more visible and recognised.
- Help shape resources that make faith and environmental action more visible and accessible.
