An event to highlight the need for just climate finance at COP26, and lobby local politicians on this issue, as part of the Relay to COP26.
This November, world leaders are meeting in Glasgow for important climate negotiations called COP26. A group led by Young Christian Climate Network have begun walking from the G7 summit of wealthy nations in Cornwall, in a relay arriving at Glasgow in time for COP26. They want to send a message that it’s time to make decisions which protect people not bank balances, and to decide that no country will go into debt tackling climate change.
The relay has four key demands:
- Reinstate the foreign aid budget to pre-COVID levels;
- Secure agreement from rich countries to double the commitment of $100bn a
year for climate finance; - Develop with other governments and international organisations a new
regulated climate loss and damage mechanism which not only saves lives but
livelihoods; - Push for the debts of the world’s poorest countries to be cancelled so they can
better confront the climate crisis and other urgent priorities.
We will be hearing more about these demands, and calling on our local leaders to hold the government to account on their commitments.
We will also welcome some of the Relay walkers arriving from Gloucestershire.
Read more about the relay and how to get involved.
The relay will be stopping in Birmingham between 23rd and 27th August, with events happening in the city centre throughout the week.
