Footsteps is working with Adam Mosque to develop an eco-action project helping Adam Mosque members to ‘save energy and reduce bills’. Cotteridge Church’s Lent Study series had been based on the Christian Aid ‘Poverty’ study material . Dr Qiam of Adam Mosque joined the final session, here is his reflection on the experience.
A Beacon of Unity: Reflections on My Visit to The Cotteridge Church, Birmingham
Today, I had the profound privilege of visiting The Cotteridge Church, a beautiful ecumenical partnership of The Methodist Church, The Church of England, and The United Reformed Church. From the moment I arrived, I was embraced with a warmth and hospitality that truly reflected the spirit of Christ—a spirit of love, openness, and brotherhood. My deepest gratitude to Chris Martin and all the wonderful members of the church for their gracious welcome and for fostering an environment where hearts and minds can meet in mutual respect.
Our discussions were fruitful, enlightening, and deeply moving, as we explored matters of faith, scripture, and tradition. What struck me most was the shared commitment to understanding one another, not merely as representatives of different traditions, but as fellow seekers of truth and servants of the Divine. These conversations are not just exchanges of ideas—they are bridges built over the divides that too often separate us.
In a world where differences are often weaponised, where division is amplified, and where fear can overshadow compassion, dialogues like these are revolutionary acts of peace. They remind us that our faiths, though distinct, all call us toward love, justice, and unity. When Christian and Muslim leaders, when people of all beliefs, come together in sincere conversation, we dispel ignorance, dissolve prejudice, and plant seeds of harmony that will flourish for generations.
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “The believers in their mutual kindness, compassion, and sympathy are just like one body. When any part of the body suffers, the whole body feels pain.” (Sahih Bukhari). Similarly, the Bible teaches, “How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity!” (Psalm 133:1). These are not just words—they are divine calls to action.
Today, at The Cotteridge Church, I witnessed the living embodiment of these teachings. This is the work that heals communities, that mends broken trust, and that lights the way toward a future where peace is not just a dream, but a reality we build together.
To all faith leaders, to all who hold influence in your communities: Let us never underestimate the power of dialogue. Let us never grow weary of reaching out, listening deeply, and standing together. For in unity, there is strength. In understanding, there is hope. And in faith—true, sincere faith—there is the power to transform the world.
May God bless The Cotteridge Church, its congregation, and all who walk the path of peace. And may our continued efforts bring us ever closer to a world united in compassion, justice, and love.
