People of different faiths in Birmingham came together as part of Interfaith Week to explore how we can ’empower and support younger people to take environmental action’.
The aim of the workshop was to share (perhaps less well-known) examples of good practice with Footsteps supporters and the wider Birmingham faith community. This led into to a discussion of how the ‘older generations’ can empower and support younger people to take faith-based climate and environmental action.
Some 15 people attended the online session and heard contributions from:
- David & Patricia Earle, Universal Peace Federation (UPF) project with younger people;
- Dr Abdul, Masjid Al-Fatiha, Moseley and Al-Shaafi Pirzafa Foundation UK and support for younger people;
- Maria Fernandes, Focalares and GrassRoutes – Focalares projects with young people;
- Fanniza Begum, Footsteps – Sun Festival at St Cyprians Church;
- Angella Del Mundo, Footsteps internships as a way of support and empowerment.
We heard about many examples of practical, on the ground action being taken with younger people. Maria’s contribution captured the essence of the wide range of contributions we heard:
- Each new generation has its own characteristics; it’s important for us to understand them.
- We should try to develop a deep understanding of others — to “make ourselves one” with them, by “putting ourselves in their shoes”, seeking to understand young people’s ideas and behaviours.
- Our goal should not be only to invite young people to join us, but to meet them where they are.
- Practice flexibility of thought.
- Recognise the positive qualities of the younger generation and the way they value sincerity; are open to everyone; and able to overcome prejudices.
- Autonomy and tools: support young people in creating their own projects without depending on adults.
The workshop ended with a call to action and to continue collaborating to provide support for younger people. We look forward to continuing these conversations and collaborations, as we bring together people of different faiths and different generations to take eco-action.
