, 22 April marks the 50th anniversary of Earth Day and the founding of a w
orld-wide environmental movement.  Some months ago\, climate action was c
hosen as its main theme as this represents the biggest challenge to the fu
ture of humanity and the life-support systems that make our world habitabl
e.\n\nBut 22 April will now also be the moment in time when our cities are
in the grips of a global COVID-19 virus pandemic with serious health\, ec
onomic and community implications.  Footsteps' face-to-face gathering and
carnival through Birmingham has had to be cancelled. The CANWM workshops
have postponed until later in the year\, so that they can take place in-pe
rson.\n\nWe now invite you to gather together online with Footsteps. We ar
e drawing strength from the recent Birmingham Faith Leaders’ group state
ment on the Covid-19 Pandemic:\n“Our thoughts and our prayers are with t
hose who suffer through the impact of Coronavirus... and our responsibilit
y towards the vulnerable in society...\n\nAbove all\, we call on all peopl
e\, during these difficult times\, to live as people of hope\; that the th
reat we all face can be overcome\, and that we will emerge stronger\, more
resilient and wiser from the experience.”\nSo rather than cancelling th
e Footsteps’ face-to-face activities planned for Earth Day 2020\, we inv
ite you to participate in our online Earth Day programme: strengthening ou
r spirit and cities taking the lead.\n\n&nbsp\;\n\n[gallery link="none" ty

is the largest environmental health risk we face today. Poor air quality
causes heart and lung diseases\, is linked to low birth weight and childre
n’s lung development and may even contribute to mental health issues
.  UK Clean Air Day is the UK's largest air pollution campaign\, engaging
thousands of people at hundreds of events\, and reaching millions more th
rough the media.\n\nThe Footsteps’ Birmingham air quality and health iss
ues survey was undertaken to investigate citizens’ experiences of the cl
eaner air window created by the Covid-19 lockdown in early 2020.  The sur
vey was undertaken by Dylan Mustafa\, a sixth form medical sciences studen

SUMMARY:COP26 webinar with Faith for the Climate
DESCRIPTION: Faith for the Climate and Footsteps (Faiths for a Low Carbon
Future) Present\nCountdown to the Glasgow UN climate summit 2021:\nFaith v
oices from Birmingham\nSpeakers:\n\n Shahin Ashraf\, MBE\, Islamic Relief
Worldwide\n Dr Malcolm Dick\, Centre for West Midlands History\, Univers
 ity of Birmingham\n\nHosted by: \n\nDr Shanon Shah\, Network Coordinator\,
Faith for the Climate\n\nRegister for the workshop\n\nIt can be frustrati
ng and confusing for many people to make sense of the urgency of the clima
te crisis alongside the bureaucratic inertia and power struggles between n
ational governments about the issue. Negative outcomes from landmark UN co
nferences about climate change - for example\, in Madrid 2019 and Copenhag
en 2010 - can be disheartening. Even the promise of the watershed Paris Ag
reement is now being met with increasing doubt and disillusionment. Will w
e ever achieve global impact on climate action?\n\nThis joint webinar betw
een Faith for the Climate and Footsteps: Faiths for a Low Carbon Future ad
dresses this question at an important and interesting time. Monday\, 9 Nov
ember\, marks what would have been the start of the 26th United Nations Co
nference of Parties (COP) on Climate Change in Glasgow\, Scotland. It is a
lso the beginning of Inter Faith Week across the UK (8-15 November). This
webinar therefore explores the crucial role that grassroots communities\,
especially faith groups\, can play in pushing for more effective and ambit
ious climate action. Our speakers will highlight the possibilities that th
e postponed COP26 offers to local and regional climate actions in Birmingh
am. They will also look at what we can all learn from the efforts of Birmi
ngham residents to contribute to climate justice - locally\, nationally an
 d globally.\n\nRegister for the workshop\n\n&nbsp\;\n\n&nbsp\;

SUMMARY:Relay to COP26: Lobby for Climate Finance
DESCRIPTION:An event to highlight the need for just climate finance at COP2
6\, and lobby local politicians on this issue\, as part of the Relay to CO
P26.\n\nThis November\, world leaders are meeting in Glasgow for important
climate negotiations called COP26. A group led by Young Christian Climate
Network have begun walking from the G7 summit of wealthy nations in Cornw
all\, in a relay arriving at Glasgow in time for COP26. They want to send
a message that it’s time to make decisions which protect people not bank
balances\, and to decide that no country will go into debt tackling clima
te change.\n\nThe relay has four key demands:\n\n Reinstate the foreign a
id budget to pre-COVID levels\;\n Secure agreement from rich countries to
double the commitment of $100bn a\nyear for climate finance\;\n Develop
with other governments and international organisations a new\nregulated cl
imate loss and damage mechanism which not only saves lives but\nlivelihood
s\;\n Push for the debts of the world’s poorest countries to be cancell
ed so they can\nbetter confront the climate crisis and other urgent priori
ties.\n\nWe will be hearing more about these demands\, and calling on our
local leaders to hold the government to account on their commitments.\n\nW
e will also welcome some of the Relay walkers arriving from Gloucestershir
e.\n\nRead more about the relay and how to get involved.\n\nThe relay will
be stopping in Birmingham between 23rd and 27th August\, with events happ

SUMMARY:West Midlands Green Jobs Summit
DESCRIPTION:Footsteps are contributing to this Friends of the Earth West Mi

ion for green jobs in our region:\n\nThe event will bring decision-maker
s\, trade unions\, businesses and skills providers together with young peo
ple and community groups from across the county to develop a shared visi
on for green jobs and ask what practical steps are needed to accel
erate this agenda?\n\nThe event will be held on  Zoom and the formal
session will run from 18.30hrs -20.00hrs\n\nBook via Eventbrite\n\nTh
e West Midlands is at a very important crossroads. As we start building a
greener and healthier world after the pandemic\, we need to transform our
economy\, our homes\, our treatment of the natural world\, how we use reso
urces and how we get about if we’re to create a secure future for our co
mmunity.\n\nFrom Coventry to Wolverhampton\, new jobs in energy efficiency
 \, low-carbon heating\, solar power and wind power\, creating a circular e
conomy and more active travel could bring enormous social and economic ben
efits. The West Midlands has a key role to play in tackling the climat
e and nature emergencies. But does it have the skilled workforce to
deliver the progress we need in the next decade?\n\nOur inspiring panel of
speakers will provide a showcase of the huge potential for creating thous
ands of rewarding\, skilled ‘green’ jobs across the region. Policy and
decision makers will then explain how we should respond to this opportuni
ty.\n\nThis event is hosted by West Midlands Friends of the Earth local gr
oups and our local activists from across the region.

SUMMARY:The Big One national climate action
DESCRIPTION:People of faith across Britain are planning to join others in A
pril as part of this mass gathering to demand climate justice. Several mem
bers of Footsteps plan to be there and supporters are welcome to join.\n\n
The gathering is organised by Extinction Rebellion who plan to bring as ma
ny groups across the UK as possible to unite and show the UK government th
at there are hundreds and thousands of people who want decisive change.
The action is about demonstrating the number of people who are seriously c
oncerned about the ecological and climate crisis.  It is not about causin
g a disruption to raise awareness\, but showing the world ‘look how many
people are concerned.’\n\nFaith for the Climate\, Christian Climate Act
ion\, Quakers in Britain and XR Buddhists are all planning to offer faith-
based witness during the four days\, and other faith groups may do as well
.  We are sorry that the dates unfortunately clash with the likely beginn
ing of Eid on 21st or 22nd April.\n\nXR Birmingham are running online Q&am
p\;As each Friday to help people find out more about the vision of The Big
One and the logistics\, at national level and in Birmingham\, for making
it effective. Coach places can be booked from Birmingham to London for the
Friday and Saturday at £20 each (or £10 unwaged).\n\nThere is also more
  information about The Big One on the national XR website.\n\n&nbsp\;

DESCRIPTION:A one-hour Zoom workshop with Kamran Shezad\, reflecting on his
experiences of attending COP28.  Kamran is Sustainability Lead for the B
AHU Trust\, and a Footsteps steering group member.\n\nCOP is the United Na

in Dubai\, United Arab Emirates.\n\nThe conference featured the first glob
al stocktake\, an assessment of action towards the goals of the 2015 Paris
Agreement. In Paris\, countries committed to holding global temperature r
ises “well below” 2˚C and to pursue efforts to limit heating to 1.5˚
  C. It was billed as a critical moment to “keep 1.5˚ C alive” as glob
al temperatures fast near this threshold.\n\nThe conference also covered o
ther important areas\, including\, the loss and damage fund and declaratio
ns on energy efficiency\, ending deforestation\, and the health impacts of
climate change.\n\nKamran attended COP28 as a faith community representat
ive and as an advisor to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) w
here BAHU Trust has accredited ‘Observer Status’.\n\nKamran will first
share his experience of COP28 and then respond to questions. When Kamran
first arrived in Dubai\, he produced a short video with his hopes and fear

l Heath have told us of the need for impartial information about heat pump
s for local community members. Installers are promoting Government grants
for heat pump installation but not always providing advice on the installa

DESCRIPTION:Footsteps is supporting this event led by Ride for Their Lives\

to explore the actions we must take to protect the planet for our patients

There will be more than 1000 delegates present. Many of our children live
in poor circumstances in an environment that creates a lifelong trajector

be physically active and to breath clean air. This needs to change.\n\nWe
will mark the Conference and their demand for child health to improve - wi
th communities\, sports and biking clubs getting on their bikes in and aro

n finishing in Centenary Square at 3.00pm where there will be a brief addr
ess from Camilla Kingdom\, the President of the Royal College of Paediatri

t West (off Sheepcote St\, which is near Broad St).  Skateboards\, roller
skates\, wheelchairs and walkers are all welcome too.\n\nFor those coming
from south Birmingham\, there is  an alternative meeting point outside t

the Warehouse\, and is a model for what a faith community 'garden' eco-act

Refreshments: Free hot and cold drinks and snacks.\n\nFootsteps works clo
sely with Birmingham Friends of the Earth (BFoE) as our aims are very much
aligned. In fact\, Footsteps is a Friends of the Earth 'local action grou
p' with a memorandum of understanding with national FoE - we are the only
faith based local action group.\n\nLast year BFoE launched their Keep Fore

pact of deforestation across the world\, linking it to our broader Planet
Over Profit campaign.  The aim of the project is to raise awareness of th
e environmental harms and human rights abuses that can occur in supply cha

of deforestation through the written word or artwork. They have collated
the submissions into a booklet which they will be sending to decision make
rs as well as using to raise awareness of the issues.\n\nThe event is drop
